AQUATIC EXERCISE

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

 

All classes are run in a group setting, are an hour long and are taught by a Certified Aquatic Specialist.  All classes include an optional 10 minutes in the hot pool.

Aquatic Exercise Classes

 

 

Aquatic Assessment

 

  • Are you unsure of which class is appropriate for you?
  • Do you doubt your abilities in the water?
  • This One-on-One (Private) 30 minute session stresses water orientation and allows the Aquatic Specialist to evaluate your individual needs and recommend placement into a program that will best serve you.  You will also learn basic water exercises, which can be applied independently.
Parent/Child Swim Group Level 1
  • Classes are limited to children 6 months to 3 years old.
  • 30 minute class, instructor lead.
  • It is a time for children and parents to learn how to be comfortable in the aquatic environment. Children become aware of the difference between moving through the water versus dry land, while parents assist children build confidence in the water. Children also have fun. With age-appropriate games that use basic water movements such as kicking and blowing bubbles.
Parent/Child Swim Group Level 2

  • Class is limited to children 3 years to 5 years old.
  • 30 minute class, instructor lead.
  • Children build more confidence in the water by gaining independence a little at a time.  Children have fun with age-appropriate games that use advanced water movements such as floating and kicking with noodles. Children build more confidence in the water so they are able to ease into an individual swim lesson.
Aquatic Back Level 1
  • One hour class, instructor lead.
  • Class focuses on exercises for trunk stabilization, range of motion, and back strengthening, while learning the boundaries of painless, safe movement.  Class provides low-impact muscle building for abdominal and the back, through direct and indirect movement to the area. 
Aquatic Back Level 2
  • One hour class, instructor lead.
  • Class utilizes medium-impact muscle building for abdominal muscles and back.  Aerobic cardiovascular work and conditioning are also included through the use of equipment.
Aquatic Arthritis Level 1
  • One hour class, Arthritis Foundation trained instructor lead.
  • A basic group exercise class designed by the Arthritis Foundation.  The class is geared toward people with arthritis and other related diseases as well as sedentary adults who are generally deconditioned and cannot endure sustained activities.  The program includes exercises to improve the participants’ overall function and performance of daily tasks, such as mobility, gate, flexibility, balance, coordination and independence.  The class is low impact, stressing range of motion with the use of stationary exercises focusing on individual joint movement.
Aqua Aerobics
  • One hour class, instructor lead.
  • A low-impact water aerobics class with exercises focusing on conditioning and increasing muscle tone.  The class can accommodate low and medium endurance levels.  Class utilizes the shallow end and the deep end to include interval exercises, deep water running, and abdominal exercises.
Acquatic Arthritis Level 2
  • One hour class, instructor lead.
  • An advanced group exercise class designed by the Arthritis Foundation.  Class includes exercises and components from the Level 1 program and progresses to an endurance component with longer periods of increased, sustained activities.  The exercises and activities are performed at a low to moderate rate of intensity to reduce the incidence of injury, yet improve muscular strength and endurance.  Combinations of range of motion, intensity and resistance variation exercises are used. 
Post Stroke

  • One hour class, instructor lead.
  • A small class for individuals who have experienced a Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Cerebral Palsy or are in need of cognitive retraining to regain flexibility and range of motion to affected muscle groups.  It focuses on educating pathways to increase flexibility, coordination, and memory and tone management.  A wide range of function levels is accommodated.

  

One-on-One Training

 

One-on-one training provides participants with a specialized workout as designed by an Aquatic Specialist.  The  half-hour training is geared to meet the client's specific needs.  The session is complemented by an additional half hour of pool time to apply the training contents independently. 

 

Individual & Group Swim Lessons

 

Individual and Group adapted Swim Lessons designed to accommodate each swimmer.  Taught by a certified instructor, they are used for both recreational and therapeutic swimming.  Each lesson is a half hour long.  The client may stay in the water for an additional half hour, before or after the lesson.  Clients under the age of 16 must a have an adult with them at all times.  Download more information on Individual & Group Swim Lessons.  To sign up for Individual or Group Swim Lessons, download the sign-up form.

 

Independent Swim

 

This is for individual use of both the pool and spa for those wanting to exercise on their own without assistance of a Certified Aquatic Specialist.  If you require an attendant for assistance they may join you in the pool at no additional cost. Lifeguards are always on duty.   Please note: The Aquatic Assessment class is recommended for those interested in utilizing Independent Swim, who would like guidance on basic exercises while in the pool. Lap Swim

 

25-yard swim lanes are available for individuals interested in swimming laps, wall to wall, in the pool.  See Pool Schedule for times available. 

 

Family Swim

 

Family swim allows a regular center participant to bring his or her whole family to enjoy the pool together.  See Pool Schedule for times available. 

 

School Recreational Swim

 

The pool is open at specific times to schools and agencies with children and adults with disabilities by special arrangement.  Please call (408) 295-0228 for more information.
